// EXPANDED CRITIQUE
So I went into Perdido Street Station expecting a wild ride, and while the worldbuilding was top-notch, the story just didn't live up to my expectations. Mieville's got this incredible ability to craft a setting that feels like it could be real - the city of New Crobuzon is dark, gritty, and full of weird alien creatures. I loved exploring all the nooks and crannies, learning about the different cultures and societies... it was like stepping into a steampunked-up version of Blade Runner.
But despite the excellent worldbuilding, the plot just didn't grab me. It's not that it was bad or anything - it's just that it felt really slow-moving and meandering. I mean, I'm okay with some ambiguity and uncertainty in my stories, but at times it felt like Mieville was more interested in showing off his setting than actually moving the plot forward. And don't even get me started on the characters... I just couldn't get invested in any of them. Overall, while Perdido Street Station has its strengths, I just didn't connect with it like I wanted to.
Original Micro-Review: "Excellent worldbuilding, good prose, meh plot. Didn't like it much. ⭐⭐"
