I just devoured A BETRAYAL IN WINTER and I'm still reeling from the twists and turns. Daniel Abraham knocked it out of the park with this second installment, surpassing the already impressive first book in the series. The succession plotline he's woven is nothing short of masterful - a complex web of alliances, rivalries, and betrayals that will keep you guessing until the very end. And let's not forget the murder mystery aspect! With all the mistaken identities and hidden agendas, I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out whodunit.
What really impressed me about this book is how Abraham skillfully wove in Asian-inspired elements without feeling like tokenistic cultural appropriation. The world-building is so rich and immersive that it's easy to get lost in the story. And don't even get me started on the characters - each one is multidimensional and feels like a fully fleshed-out person (or group of people). I'm seriously hooked on this series now and can't wait to dive into book three!
Original Micro-Review: "Book two rocked, even better than the first. An Asian-inspired succession plotline with lots of murder and mistaken identity. Very good. Onto book 3! ⭐⭐⭐⭐"
