I'm so glad I finally gave in and picked up Kushiel's Dart - it was definitely worth the investment of time. Yeah, it's a long book, but trust me when I say it's one that rewards your commitment. Carey's writing is just incredibly lush and vivid, making it easy to get swept up in the world she's created. And even though some of the themes and characters might be a little (okay, a lot) out there, she handles them with such sensitivity and care that you can't help but be drawn in.
I have to admit, I was a little wary at first - all those warnings about graphic content had me bracing myself for impact. But while it's true that some of the scenes are pretty intense, Carey never feels like she's gratuitous or exploitative. And when it counts, she shows an amazing ability to balance the darker elements with moments of beauty and tenderness. I was genuinely surprised by how much it got me emotionally - I mean, who expects to cry while reading about angels and assassins? But Carey's got a way of making you care deeply about her characters, even when they're doing some pretty questionable things. So yeah, if you're up for the challenge, Kushiel's Dart is definitely worth your time.
Original Micro-Review: "Finally got around to reading this. It's very long, and it's got some messed up elements. But it's also incredibly well written and emotionally powerful. Teared up at the end, for sure. ⭐⭐⭐⭐"
