I went in expecting another thrilling ride with the series, and while Worldbreaker did deliver on some fronts, it fell short for me overall. The first four books were like a swashbuckling adventure - fast-paced, action-packed, and full of excitement. But this one took a sharp turn into more meta territory, exploring the magic system in ways that felt like ret-conned backstory dumping. Don't get me wrong, I love when authors take risks and challenge their own mythos, but in this case it just didn't quite land for me.
The real saving grace was the ending - wow, what a finale! It left me feeling all the feels and made up for some of the slower pacing earlier on. Still, as a whole, I'd say Worldbreaker was a solid "mid" book for me. The issues with ret-conning aside, there were just too many moments where the story felt like it was treading water, waiting for the climax to arrive. It's not that it was bad per se - just underwhelming compared to the rest of the series.
Original Micro-Review: "The first four were almost swashbuckling adventures, where book 5 went into more meta-exploration of the magic system. Felt like a lot was ret-conned. The ending was fantastic, but I'd day the rest of the book was mid. ⭐⭐⭐"
